About Belange
Belange Mutunda is a multi-award-winning fashion designer whose creative vision and passion have propelled her to the forefront of the U.S. fashion industry. Known for her vibrant, conversation-starting designs, bold styles, and pops of color, Belange blends aesthetic excellence with social impact. Her decade-long journey reflects resilience, determination, and a relentless pursuit of excellence.
Early Life
Belange Mutunda’s remarkable journey in fashion began in 2014, in the Democratic Republic of Congo, at just 17 years old. At the time, she was a mathematics and physics major in high school, on track to follow in her father’s footsteps as an engineer. However, just three months before graduating, she discovered her passion for fashion design. Determined to pursue this newfound calling, she set her sights on attending fashion school in college.
She started teaching herself sewing skills through YouTube videos, books, and online resources, driven by curiosity and determination. With only $10 to her name and no formal background in business or fashion, she took her first steps into entrepreneurship. Belange began creating and reselling handmade products, using discarded and repurposed materials like plastic bags, secondhand clothing, plastic bottles, and more. She transformed these materials into jewelry, purses, backpacks, wallets, and decorative flowers, primarily adorned with African prints as a way to celebrate and honor her culture.
Despite facing severe bullying during this time, Belange’s talent and entrepreneurial spirit won over those who once doubted her. Her bullies became her marketers, spreading the word about her work and helping the business grow through powerful word-of-mouth support.
As the business grew, every member of her family became more involved. Her mother served as her buyer, helping to purchase African prints. Her father contributed to the business by investing in its growth. Her brothers created her first website. Her younger sister made deliveries whenever Belange couldn’t, and her older sister, supported the venture by helping buy supplies in China.
Despite the fast business growth and growing fanbase,  Belange's small business still had no official name. It was her elder sister who suggested the name "Belange Handmade" —combining the founder's first name, meaning Pretty Angel in French, with Handmade to reflect the craft and care that went into every piece. That is how "Belange Handmade" aka "BHM" was born.
Moving to the United States to Pursue Her American Dream
Driven by her passion and desire to refine her skills, Belange moved to the United States in 2015 to study fashion design. She attended the Des Moines Area Community College Fashion Institute (DMACC DFI) from 2016 to 2018, where she earned an Associate of Applied Science (AAS) in Fashion Design and Merchandising as well as an Associate in General Studies (ASG). While studying full-time, she worked part-time in retail as a Sales Associate for companies like brands such as Banana Republic, Old Navy, and Levi’s, and she gained valuable retail and merchandising experience. She further expanded her knowledge by completing courses in business and marketing.
Belange’s dedication continued at Iowa State University (2018–2020), where she earned her Bachelor’s degree in Apparel, Merchandising, and Design, focusing on Creative and Technical Design. There, she excelled academically and demonstrated leadership as a teaching assistant. She held roles as an Undergraduate Pattern-Making Teaching Assistant (AMD 225) and a 3D Designer Teaching Assistant (AMD 310) within the prestigious College of Human Sciences’ Apparel, Merchandising, and Design program. In these positions, Belange championed innovation by teaching herself a 3D virtual fashion tool called CLO3D and introduced this tool into the fashion program during the challenging times of the COVID-19 pandemic. She developed all CLO3D teaching modules in the form of video tutorials and taught the program in AMD 310. Her achievements were recognized with multiple business grants from the ISU Pappajohn Center for Entrepreneurship, awards, accolades, and extensive media coverage from Iowa State University. Belange’s relentless pursuit of excellence culminated in her being named the Fall 2020 University Student Marshal and Graduating Senior of the Year, graduating Magna Cum Laude with a GPA of 3.80.
Seeking even more expertise, Belange went on to complete a Master's of Professional Studies (MPS) in Fashion Marketing at LIM College in New York City in 2022, graduating with the highest honors and an outstanding GPA of 3.97 (Summa Cum Laude). This experience equipped her with knowledge in fashion marketing, specifically in licensing, which led to her to secure a lifetime licensing partnership with SHEIN, the world's largest online retailer, in Spring 2023. Belange has designed 5 capsule collections that have been distributed globally by SHEIN though their SHEINX Incubator Program.Â

Belange’s commitment extends beyond fashion design. Since 2022, she has served on the Advisory Board of the Des Moines Area Community College Fashion Institute (DMACC DFI), helping enhance the program’s curriculum and student experience. In recognition of her achievements and community work, DMACC honored her as a Distinguished Alumna with the 2023 Alumni Early Achievement Award, making her a "Notable Alumna" of the institution.ÂÂ
In 2024, she returned to Iowa State University to pursue a Ph.D. in Apparel, Merchandising, and Design. She teaches undergraduate courses (AMD 210: Computer Application in Digital Design and AMD 245: Aesthetics and Brand Image) while focusing her research on fashion entrepreneurship, consumer behavior in e-commerce, and social sustainability in small businesses. Through her work, Belange aims to empower the next generation of fashion entrepreneurs.
